Many students are facing the challenges of switching their GCSE syllabus from the International Maths GCSE to the UK Maths GCSE. There are significant differences.

The UK Maths GCSE covers 12 topics which are not covered on the International GCSE Syllabus. International GCSE students will have these gaps in their learning.   

• The International GCSE has 2 exam papers, both of which allow the use of a calculator.  The teaching of the International GCSE focusses more heavily on calculator use.
• The UK GCSE has 3 exam papers, one of which is a non-calcultor paper.
• The International GCSE Papers are more formula based, where the formulas are given in the exam. 
• For the UK GCSE very few formulas are given with students expected to learn the rest.
• The International GSCE Exams are more predictable than the UK GCSE.
• The wording on the International GCSE is kept relatively simple as the papers are written for the global market where many students have English as a second language.

Key areas that students stuggle with are:-

• The non calculator aspects of the GCSE syllabus.
• The new content on the GCSE Syllabus.
• The non predictability of exam questions.
